Wednesday A new record was set at a New York Sotheby’s auction when Francis Bacon’s three-panel work; Triptych, 1976 sold for 86 million dollars. This price was more than the $72.8 million auction record for modern art, set when Mark Rothko’s White Center (Yellow, Pink and Lavender on Rose) sold last year at Sotheby’s.
Francis Bacon (1909 -1992) (an Irish painter, NOT British, and I don’t care if you consider Ireland part of The United Kingdom he is Irish) is truly a modern master of painting. Not to compare apples to oranges, but when I view Bacon’s work, a darker Dali is what comes to mind. Let’s just hope whoever bought it puts it in a museum somewhere so we all can enjoy it. Myself, I prefer Bacon to Dali (whom was very handy with a brush but he doesn’t have the depth, the insight, the tragedy which is present in Bacon’s works (he liked Van Gogh a lot, too, he did some interpretation of vincent on the road to Arles or something like that…) Did you heard about the absolute record of almost 200 milions USD that a Golden nude by Gustav Klimt recently had at an auction? He beat Picasso, he beat Van Gogh… I’m not sure Klimt qualifies for modern art – he died around 1930 I think – but I think he set the record for all times, for now… I suppose if a Leonardo or Rafael would be put at auction it would be even more…
